Alex & Books: The Art of Reading
Hey friends,
I have some BIG news to share with you all and since you're true Alex & Books supporters, you're getting early access and a special treat you won't find anywhere else. But first, let me tell you a quick story.I used to think I just "wasn't a reader."In fact, for most of my life, I despised reading. I spent most of my time playing video games, scrolling social media, or watching movies. Basically doing everything but reading books. However, one day, a college professor introduced me to How To Win Friends & Influence People by Dale Carnegie. I had no idea how powerful and life-changing a book could be until that moment. After reading it, I became determined to read as many books as I could get my hands on.But my reading journey wasn't all smooth sailing.I wanted to read more, but sometimes I just couldn't get through a book. Other times, I found a great book but couldn't focus on it and would end up gravitating towards my phone. I also found it difficult to find time to read with my busy schedule (I was a full-time student and working part-time). And the books that I did read, I would have a hard time remembering what I've read.I'm sure many of you can relate.
You want to spend more time reading. But have trouble finding time in your busy schedule.
You want to find interesting books to read. But it seems like there are thousands of books out there, all begging you to read them.
How do you decide which books are interesting? Which ones are worth your time?
When you do start reading, you find yourself getting distracted and losing focus.
You know you should take notes while reading. But you don’t know any simple yet effective strategies.
You want to read more books. But reading feels like a chore rather than something fun.
And if you aren't reading books, you're missing out on a world of benefits.
You're depriving yourself of expanding your knowledge, learning new skills, opening your mind, and transforming your life.
In the current age of knowledge work, those who learn more, earn more. And those who don't read, decrease their chances of becoming successful and make room for competitors to surpass them.
But even if you're a reader, you may not be getting the most out of your books.
Here’s another common struggle: you're reading but don't know how to read effectively and efficiently. It's like going for a run without tying your shoes. You're only getting a part of the benefits.
Reading is only one step in the learning process. You also need to know how to remember what you've read, organize that information, and apply those lessons to get the results you want in life.
Otherwise, you'll be reading one book after another without any major changes in your life.
It took me a while before I came to an important realization:
I realized that reading, like driving a car or playing tennis, was a skill. There were things I could learn and do to become better at it. I thought being literate and
being
a reader were the same thing. I couldn’t have been more wrong.
You see, school teaches you how to read, BUT it doesn't teach you how to become a reader.
After that light bulb moment, I went on a journey to understand everything I could about the art of reading. Here are just a few of the important lessons I discovered...
I read books about behavior change (like Atomic Habits and Tiny Habits) to learn how to build a lasting reading habit.
I read books about focus (like Indistractable and Digital Minimalism) to learn how I could stop getting distracted while reading.
I read books about reading faster (10 Days to Faster Reading) and books about reading slower (The Art of Slow Reading) to improve my reading comprehension.
I read books about becoming a better reader (like I'd Rather Be Reading and The Pleasure of Reading In An Age of Distraction) to improve my reading skill.
I even read the classic reading guide How To Read A Book and ordered a bonus 3-hour DVD to learn additional lessons from the authors.
Basically, I became obsessed with learning how to become a better reader.
Now I want to share everything I've learned with you.
