A&B #29

Alex & Books #29

Hey friends,

Big news: Alex & Books is officially 4 years old.

That's right, I started A&B back in March 2017. It's crazy to think how fast those years flew by. Here are a few cool things we've achieved so far:

Whether you've been a fan of Alex & Books for 4 days or 4 years, thank you for your love and support.

My dream is to turn A&B into a full-time position so I can inspire more people to read books and become better readers. If you'd like to help make that happen, please

on social media and ask your friends to join our reading community.

Alright, let's dive into this week's newsletter.

    📚 Book Lessons:

This week I read Love Yourself Like Your Life Depends On It by Kamal Ravikant. If you're looking for a book about positive self-talk or mindset, this book is for you. If you enjoyed As a Man Thinketh by James Allen, you'll enjoy this book. Here are 3 lessons from the book: 1) Forgive YourselfThe first step to loving yourself is forgiving yourself. To step into the future, you must first release the shackles of your past. People will work hard to forgive others for the mistakes they've committed, but oftentimes, don't forgive themselves for their mishaps or slipups. Let go of what's holding you back from loving yourself so that you can forgive yourself and start on a new path in life.  2) Make A Vow To Love YourselfNow that you've forgiven yourself, it's time to start loving yourself. It may sound like a silly exercise, but here's why it works:

    • Your thoughts and emotions create your internal state.

    • Your internal state influences your external state.

    • Your external state affects your life.

Making a vow to love himself saved Kamal's life. He was depressed, suicidal, and close to giving up on life. But things changed when he made a promise to love himself. He would constantly repeat to himself that he loved himself and within a few months, he was happy, healthy, and loving life again.3) Create A Practice of Loving Yourself

There are multiple ways to love yourself. Here are 4 practices you can try:

    • Mental loop: Repeat the phrase "I love myself" to yourself throughout the day.

    • Meditation: Find a piece of music that makes you feel good, play it, close your eyes, and tell yourself "I love myself" with each breath you take.

    • Mirror: Stare into your eyes in the mirror and tell yourself that you love yourself for five minutes.

    • Question: Whenever you're faced with a situation you're not sure about, ask yourself: "If I loved myself truly and deeply, what would I do?"

      Actionable Advice:

      1) Forgive yourself

      • Grab a piece of paper and write down everything that you hold against yourself.

      • Then look at your list and remind yourself that you're a human being and all of us make mistakes.

      • Finally, take that paper and destroy it. You can shred it, light it on fire, or come up with another creative way to get rid of it. The act itself is symbolic. You're throwing away everything you held against yourself.

      2) Practice loving yourself

      • Mental loop: Repeat the phrase "I love myself" to yourself throughout the day.

      • Meditation: Find a piece of music that makes you feel good, play it, close your eyes, and tell yourself "I love myself" with each breath you take.

      • Mirror: Stare into your eyes in the mirror and tell yourself that you love yourself for five minutes.

      3) Ask yourself this one question:

      • If I loved myself truly and deeply, what would I do?

📖 Reading Lesson:One of the best ways to remember what you've read in a book is to teach it to others. If you think you can learn a lot from reading books, just wait till you try explaining what you learned in a Twitter thread. Here are a few Twitter threads on books I've read:
