📚 5 Bad Reading Habits You Need UNLEARN From School

[5 Days Left] Unlearn these bad habits to become a better reader.

School does a wonderful job teaching you how to read, but a terrible job teaching you how to love reading.

The truth is that people pick up several bad reading habits from school and carry them into adulthood years after leaving the classroom.

If you want to become a better reader, you'll need to unlearn these 5 bad habits:

1) Waiting To Be Told What Book To Read Next

From elementary school to college, you’re assigned books.

You wait passively for someone to tell you what to read. But when you graduate, there's no one to tell you what you should read and so you stop reading altogether.

Instead, aim to be an active reader–someone who selects books their books proactively instead of reactively.

2) Not Writing In Your Books

If a book belongs to the school or library, then of course don't write in it.

BUT if you bought a book, you can (and should) highlight quotes and insights you find valuable, and jot down notes in the margins.

Doing so is a great way to make reading more engaging and it will help you remember more of what you read.

3) Only Reading Physical Books

In school, you don’t get the option of exploring different book mediums.

You're given a print book and that's it. But perhaps you may actually enjoy reading if you tried a different book medium.

Maybe you'll like ebooks since you can adjust the text which makes it easier to read or listen to an audiobook which is more fun because it brings the story to life.

4) Reading For Memorization

In school, students are taught that memorization is the goal of reading.

You need to remember the characters, plot, and literary devices for the upcoming quiz or final exam. But that's not true in the real world.

Life is an open-book test, and unlike school, it rewards application not memorization.

5) Finishing Every Book You Start

One of the worst habits students pick up from school is to finish every book they start.

This is because, in school, students need to finish the book or they risk failing an exam or maybe even the class. So, students power through books to please their parents and teachers.

But as a result, reading ends up feeling like a chore instead of a fun activity and they end up hating reading.

That’s why it’s much better to quit a book than to quit reading altogether.

Learning is important, but sometimes unlearning is even more valuable.

Unlearn these five bad habits and you'll find yourself with a stronger passion for reading than you ever thought possible.
